I think you will enjoy this wallpaper this month. It is one of my favorites. This was shot in Shigatse, Tibet’s second largest city at a monastery called Tashilhunpo. These workshops are really a joy to run and I as you can see below our participants really feel they get their money’s worth.

Adventure of a lifetime…another notch in the bucket list! Matt, Brian, and Jamin were knowledgeable, approachable, and perpetually concerned about everyone’s well being. This trip was an incredible value in all parameters, I would highly recommend entrusting your hard-earned vacation dollars with this trio. ~ Jim M.

Brian, Matt, and Jamin provided us with a such an amazing, perhaps “once-in-a-lifetime” experience that will not soon be forgotten. Bottom line: I wouldn’t go to Tibet with any other folks, folks. I will be teaching with three heavy weights Karl Grobl, Gavin Gough and Marco Ryan July 11- 25th at Angkor Wat.  Angkor is one of the most culturally and visually exciting places in the world. Let me introduce you to the talented instructors that I will be teaching alongside.

Karl Grobl is a humanitarian photojournalist specializing in the photographic documentation of relief efforts and development work of NGOs worldwide. His images have appeared in publications such as Newsweek, CNN, Geo, Town and Country magazine and The Chronicle of Philanthropy, but the largest majority of his photos appear in the annual reports, newsletters and communications materials of his humanitarian organization clients. Karl’s non-NGO work is represented by Zuma Press, the premier international editorial picture agency and wire service. His 2005 Haiti photo-story “City of God” was nominated for a World Press Photo Award.

Gavin Gough is an independent, freelance travel photographer. Originally from England, Gavin is currently based in Bangkok, Thailand, from where he travels extensively, working on assignment, on commission, creating stock images, writing and teaching. He has been commissioned by a variety of NGOs, humanitarian and charitable institutions and has completed commissions for organisations as varied as Sony, Vanity Fair magazine and the Vietnamese Tourist Board.

Marco Ryan is originally form the UK but moved to live and work in Cairo in 2008. He is a lecturer and author on Digital Media and how businesses need to react to the increasing disruption caused by the web and digital media. He is also a passionate photographer. He founded the popular Cairo Photo School and is the joint owner of the Cairo Photo Studio. His love and passion for travel and humanitarian photography has taken him all around the world, and he has a vast network of Professional photographers, editors and enthusiasts that he regularly keeps in touch with through social media and his blog.

The Angkor Photo Workshop is limited to 15 participants and we only have three spots left! This small enrollment provides each and every participant plenty of face time with our 4 instructors during the workshop portion of the trip and with 3 instructors during the “road trip” portion of the tour. First I must apologies for not providing a wallpaper for you last month. I think that may be the first month I missed in three years! I decided as a result you needed something special. After thinking it through, I came to the conclusion that nothing less than this shot of Mt. Everest would do. So, I present to you Chomolungma in Tibetan or Sagarmāthā in Nepali aka Mt Everest! There are no words to describe this beast. She is huge and the north face is by far the best view of Everest. I hope you enjoy. But watch yourselves, you only have half as much oxygen up here!

Chinese New Year is all about prosperity, blessing, luck, lanterns and red! Everything around here is red. Red banners, red signs, red dresses, red lanterns and more red lanterns. There are so many red lanterns when I close my eyes I see red dots! The town is completely decked out in red lanterns. So here for your February desktop enjoyment is red! But I know some of you might find a red desktop a little unsettling (like me) and so I have given you a few options this month. Here is my January 2011 wallpaper for you. A simple yellow wall from the city of Hoi An, Vietnam. I was a little hard on Hoi An in my previous post. Yes, it is very touristy, but I would come back just for the mornings before the tourist arrive. The city is covered in yellow walls all trimmed in blue doors and window shades. This month’s wallpaper is an image from the high-altitude lake Tso Moriri. Quite frankly, an amazing place. It reminded me a lot of Alaska. At 15,000 feet it wasn’t easy schlepping a tripod and two heavy 5D MK2s with 3 pound lenses attached. But with a little patience and the use of a clone tool to take out the two rogue Slovak photographers down by the lake, a decent image appears. If my memory serves me correct I use a two stop graduated neutral density filter on this. I simply hand-held it up to the lens.

I realize I am about a week late in posting this wallpaper, so I think I’ll skip the iPhone wallpaper on this one to save some time.

This month’s wallpaper is for all you coffee lovers out there. A nice close up of some Sumatran arabica coffee beans being roasted over an open fire. The smoke of the dark roast rising to through the beans. I hope you enjoy it and that the caffeine doesn’t keep you up at night. By now you will have noticed I have not been posting on this blog over this past week or so. I am on the road and will be spending much of August in Indonesia on assignment and in meetings with several organizations. Last week I taught a workshop on how to compose and shoot better images with the camera you have. Fun stuff, I have not taught complete novices’ in a long time and it was rewarding.

Indonesia is green to say the least. Lush vegetation of every plant imaginable. Yet, as is so often the case, one of my favorite images was taken in the most common of places – next to the wall of a hotel. This photo of bamboo communicates relaxation and peace to me and so I hope it will work well on your desktop. This month I continued the idea I started with last month in providing you with a theme for your iPhone or iPod Touch.

This month’s wallpaper is a fun image I shot in India while traveling by train from Delhi to Hardiwar. I wanted to get a shot that showed the train as well as the countryside. The train was important as it gives context and an integral part of the visual story. The countryside without people would have been be just countryside. Contrary to what most people may think, outside of a few banana trees India’s northern countryside looks about like anywhere else on earth. So I needed to have some people with indigenous clothing or some other object that said ” this is India”. When you shoot from something like a train, about half the images or more are unusable. Finally, just about the time I was considering packing it in, I saw this woman and the banana tree appearing fast from up ahead. I leaned out as far as I could holding on to the train with my left hand. I had my camera balanced on the upper part of my left arm and triggered the camera with my right hand.  Whether it was a combination of skill or just plain luck, I got what I wanted.
