I am a few days late in posting my July wallpaper. After returning from Egypt I find myself trying to dig out from under masses of e-mails and all kinds of DAM (Digital Asset Management) work. So today I took a few minutes to put together a wallpaper for you from my trip to Egypt. This month’s is slightly different, in that many of you have the iPhone iSO4 now on your iPhone’s. As a result you now have a need for both a lock screen image and wallpaper. so I’ve put together a theme of sorts for you from this past trip. This was a window from my favorite Nubian village we visited. I hope you enjoy it. Let me know if you like the theme idea.

Wallpaper: June 2010

This month’s wallpaper is a fun image I shot in India while traveling by train from Delhi to Hardiwar. I wanted to get a shot that showed the train as well as the countryside. The train was important as it gives context and an integral part of the visual story. The countryside without people would have been be just countryside. Contrary to what most people may think, outside of a few banana trees India’s northern countryside looks about like anywhere else on earth. So I needed to have some people with indigenous clothing or some other object that said ” this is India”. When you shoot from something like a train, about half the images or more are unusable. Finally, just about the time I was considering packing it in, I saw this woman and the banana tree appearing fast from up ahead. I leaned out as far as I could holding on to the train with my left hand. I had my camera balanced on the upper part of my left arm and triggered the camera with my right hand. Whether it was a combination of skill or just plain luck, I got what I wanted.

This month’s image was taken during the Lumen Dei Kumbh Mela workshop in Haridwar, India. Everywhere you turn, you find the most amazing old walls in Haridwar. More texture than almost anyplace I have visited.

April Wallpaper

This is going to be a quick post. You’ve seen the picture above from when I was in the Perhentian Islands a week or so back. So now it’s my gift to you for the month of April. I thought it would make a rather springy/summery wallpaper. I’m quickly putting the last little pieces of gear in my luggage for The Kumbh Mela Lumen Dei workshop with Gavin Gough, that starts next week. We leave Sunday evening. This will be a special trip for me, as my wife will be working with us. Getting her to come along on these trips, is something I want to do more often. March Wallpaper: Give Peace a Shot with IGVP!

This month’s wallpaper is courtesy of the International Guild of Visual Peacemakers. I am a member of several guilds and organizations, but there is none that I feel more proud to be a part of than the IGVP. Not only because I share membership with noted photographers like Ami Vitale, David duChemin, Gavin Gough and others, but because of what it stands for. To quote from the IGVP about page:

IGVP is a membership-based network of visual communicators and staff united around one purpose: Visual Peacemaking. We are an international community composed of multiple ethnic and religious backgrounds. IGVP visual communicators use their craft to breakdown stereotypes of the “other,” to display the dignity of cultures, and to show the common humanity amongst peoples of the world.

This month is the run up for the official start to the guild in all it’s glory. On April 15st membership will begin for community members and the new, very cool, website will be release around the same time. Downoad this month’s “Give Peace a Shot” desktop wallpaper and join me and other of the IGVP community as we Shoot for Peace.

I have given this months wallpaper more thought than usual. I decided since Penang is awash with Chinese New Years preparation I would join in. Chinese New Year is the 15th. So my gift to you is not one but two complete sets of wallpaper for most any size screen as well as for your iPhone or iPod Touch. The lantern plays a significant part in may Chinese celebrations. Part of the Chinese New Year celebration is the lantern festival. Where lanterns are hung everywhere. If you are like me, you have two desktops; a monitor and a laptop, so you have a place for each. Now you can join in and hang your lanterns right on your desktop! By the way, the Chinese on the top and side simply wishes you a “Happy and Prosperous New Year.”

To download click the link of the size you want. For Windows user you can right click the large image and set as a desktop image. For Mac users, just drag the image to your desktop. Then, open your Desktop & Screen Saver tool and drag it into it.

January’s Wallpaper

You know what they say, “Better late than never.” I am trying to get caught up on my posting and will probably jet caught up just in time to leave for Iraq on the 25th. Here is January’s Wallpaper for 2010. This is the way I took it. I did not add any effects or filters to this. The photo is the refection of the buildings surrounding Nizamuddin well. The water is the well that is at the center of the colony.

When I lead tours or workshops around Delhi one of my favorite places to visit is the Darga of Nizam-ud-din, also known as the Shrine of Nizamuddin. Nizam-ud-din was a Sufi mystic known as a Pir, kinda like a shaman. He was known to have strong powers and a large popular following. In 1320 the Sultan of Delhi was named Ghias-ud-din Tughlak. He was what you might call, a really bad dude. Tughlak was building a “New” Delhi, a sort of monument to himself. He conscripted all the men in the area to help. One day whilst he was away pillaging and plundering our hero, Hazrat (Lord) Nizam-ud-din decided his people needed a large well or cistern. He asked the locals to help build it, they all wanted his blessing far more than they feared Sultan Tughlak so they helped. Once the Sultan heard of this, he was incensed and sent a letter to Nizamuddin demanding him to cease work on the well at once. Nizamuddin responded with a curse that went something like this, “Your city will never be completed and the only inhabitants will be Gujjars & jackels.” Well, you can imagine that that the King was not amused by this and wanted his head on a platter, literally. He started back to Delhi and soon word got back to Nizamuddin that the King, Sutan Tughlak, was camped not far outside of Delhi. Nizamuddin coolly responded, “Hunuz Dilli dur est” or “Delhi is still far away.” That afternoon whilst reviewing his troops, his son his son, Muhammad bin Tughlaq’s elephant “accidentally” knocked over the stone Chhatri (gazebo) his father the King was sitting under. That was the end of the Sultan Ghias-ud-din Tughlak. The city he was building remains unfinished till today and in the ruins of it live Gujjar Buffalo herders (I have visited them myself!). The well was finished and still provides water to the colony of Nizamuddin.

I don’t have any current snowy images that I can use to make the December Wallpaper for you. No icicles hanging from the eaves or people huddled around a fire. Sorry, I live in the tropics. So, I decided to at least give you a high key desktop image. This is an image of a woman praying at the Nizamuddin Dargah, a Muslim shrine in New Delhi. The image was shot through the marble lattice from the inside of the shrine looking out at the ladies. In a Muslim shrine, ladies are not allowed inside the tomb area, so they congregate around the latticework barrier. They petition and pray to the dead saint to intercede on their behalf for what ever is troubling them and their families. There’s a certain stillness about this image, a quiet pensive moment that might help you calm yourself during these hectic holidays.

I know I’ve been quiet for the past few weeks. I’m not sure why the creative writing juices are not flowing, as a result it’s been a rather dry time. As I wrote yesterday, Gavin Gough flew in for a quick visit. While here we both confessed we are slackers and slapped each others hands for not posting more regularly. My goal has always been to posts three times a week, but I’m afraid I haven’t been very true to that. So – in hopes to make amends – please accept a gift of this months wallpaper as my way of saying I am sorry and please forgive me.

I shot this image on this past Lumen Dei while visiting Thiksey, a monastery outside of Leh, Ladakh. This is one of those pictures that proves people are the same everywhere. Here, a small monk is trying to wake up during early morning puja or devotions. He’s doing his best to stay awake but finds it almost impossible. What little boy at the same age wouldn’t be fighting to stay awake, whether he is in a monastery in the Ladakh or at church in Texas or a mosque in Lebanon, this the boy could be any boy. I think this is what makes this photo work, it’s real, it’s a moment we all relate with.
